Service Learning Grant money has paid for things such as cameras, worm composting bins and plants
Ms. Swensen (2nd Grade Teacher) and Ms. Mahoney (Enrichment Teacher) both received mini grants this year from the Service Learning Department.

Ms. Swensen's project is called "The Circle of Life" and incorporates the on-site prairie garden, worm composting, the MN Wildlife Refuge, Saint Paul Watershed District, Metro State, the Elder's Lodge and the expertise of Paul Red Elk (Native Herbalist) & Bob White (Native Elder).

Ms. Mahoney's project is called "MN Wildlife Refuge Partnership" and is tied to Ms. Swensen's "Circle of Life" project.  Students are documenting planting in the classroom, planting in the prairie garden, experiential learning at the Refuge, and planting at the Elder's Lodge.  This is a collaboration between Science, Ojibwe Culture/Language and Technology.  Students will use the photos they have taken to share their knowledge with others through KidPix presentations

and Comic Life print materials.  Students will be formally presenting at the Water Festival on May 16th, the Technology Student Showcase on May 20th and the MN Wildlife Refuge.  Their print materials will be available at our Annual End-of-Year Powwow on May 29th.

Thanks to money from the Service Learning Dept. of Saint Paul Public Schools, Ms. Swensen and Ms. Mahoney were fortunate enough to attend last year's National Service Learning Conference in Minneapolis where they made many valuable contacts and attended great workshops.  Also, this year Service Learning paid for Ms. Mahoney and Ms. Swensen to attend a town hall meeting with Congresswoman Betty McCollum at the NYLC headquarters in Roseville.  The purpose of the meeting was to give Congresswoman McCollum information about what's happening in Minnesota regarding Service Learning that she could present before Congress.
